How to off season decorate... magazine style

Ho Ho Ho... Merry Christmas all!

If there's one thing I know for certain, it's that those who contribute to a magazine will never be running late for decorating during a given season. :)

While most would now be wrapping things up with summer and focusing on driving the kids to school and fall sports, the FOLK team has gone into full tilt Christmas mode!

See this 'festive' pile of twigs? I'm busy turning this into a fantastical must have Christmas decoration that anyone can do. You'll see the full reveal in the Nov/Dec edition of FOLK.

But I'll admit the sunshine and gardening didn't exactly motivate me quite the right way.

I think the rest of the FOLK team had some pretty creative ideas for getting into the spirit before it's time. Here's how a few of them did it:

Hillary Lewis

"I always seem to be in the Christmas spirit. Last year I put up my first tree the first week of October and didn't take it down until March! I don't feel like we should live in the 'season' for only one season. Apply those values throughout the year, and you'll find a much more joy filled life!"

Deb Kennedy

"My neighbour's car just SCREECHED to a halt when she drove past and saw me carrying a white Christmas tree up my front steps. She yelled, "What is WRONG with you!?" I had some 'splainin' lest she think I am crazier than I actually AM. :)

I just finally kicked myself into visual merchandising mode... left the emotion out of it and pretended I was building displays for a retail customer (what I've done for over 30 years). Once I got going, I was further inspired. And I am SO HAPPY with the photos!"

Liza Turner

"I've been thinking about scenes from my favorite Christmas movies... but mentally photoshopping some of my family and friends into each. It's an imaginary photo shoot that occasionally inspires me, but ALWAYS tickles me. When this fails, I say break out the eggnog. :)"

Kimberly Taylor

"Baking Christmas cookies here, lots and lots and lots of cookies... and this isn't even for FOLK. But it's getting me a bit in the spirit!"

Ben Ashby

"You all are funny... I'm sitting next to a Christmas tree and looking at a living room full of FOLK orders... and finally getting them to their rightful owners is nearly done. That's the merriest Christmas of all!"

Donna Williams

"My project ended up being pretty time consuming, so I treated myself to a Netflix treasure, then sat and mindlessly crafted away. It's working!"

So there you have it! How to decorate before it's time.

When do you start decorating for a given season?

  1. Great Post! I'm working hard on the Christmas spirit despite the 100 degree temperatures in the wine country these past few days!

  6. On September 5th I listed some rustic Christmas candles in my Etsy shop. Sept. 5th? My husband thought I had lost my mind when he saw red and green twine. Just a few days before, it was rustic Halloween candles. LOL.

In college, to get into the spirit I would toss my Perry Como Christmas tape (cassette!!) into the player. Today, it's the digital TV or Pandora, but music does it for me. Oh, and the scent of apples and cinnamon. Yum!

  8. Very cool to hear about all the fun techniques you all have to try to get in the spirit of things.

I have been working feverishly to get my Christmas projects made for my mid-Fall craft shows. Seems kinda weird to be working on sleighs and skates at the same time as Witches Hats and pumpkins!
